design and the market – research and lectures
Design and the Market has begun in ernest with two more great inspiring lectures. Professor Mike Press gave us a brilliant insight on how to research someone, whether it be a freelance designer, design intermediary or design company and this will all be put into practice for our first assignment. I’m to work in a group of 6 from within my textile discipline. Our task is to choose a designer who we can approach to interview and gain an insight into them and what makes them tick. We had great discussions as a group and have picked a designer we think will be amazing we just have to confirm with him and will tell who once we’ve heard back. Its very exciting if it goes ahead.
Lindsey Gardiner also gave a great talk about her career since completing her MA in Winchester and the ups and downs of being a designer and wow what a career Lindsey has had, from childrens book illustrator to textile designer maker to fine artist with her work being sold worldwide and is the best selling author within Dundee University with sales over 2,000.000! Lindseys love of dogs is evident with her own Lola and Yuki being the star attractions in her work which is a mix of collage, graphics and line drawings. All illustrations and art are done by hand, cutting and pasting with scissors and glue. If you’re in Edinburgh her fine art pieces are for sale at Anthropologie and they are amazing – I’ve seen them! Books can be purchased through Amazon and her textile range Quietly Eccentric is available at Not on the High Street. Lindseys talk gave great insight into what has up till now been a mystery with regard to agents and what can happen upon graduating. Finally I just have to add that we in the textiles department at DJCAD are very fortunate to have Lindsey as our drawing tutor!
